FrontPage Server Extensions and Expression Web
I’ve seen a lot of questions posted in a variety of places regarding FrontPage Server Extensions (FPSEs) and Expression Web.
For those of you not familiar with FPSEs, they are essentially proprietary server-side scripts that supported the web components in FrontPage.
There are no extensions—and by extension, no web components—in Expression Web. If you open your existing FrontPage web site with Expression Web, you can edit any existing web components. However, because there are no web components in Expression Web, you can’t add any new ones.
FrontPage 2003 had already begun moving away from FPSEs. For example, there were no updates to the FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions from Microsoft, and the only web components available in FrontPage 2003 were those that were supported by the 2002 Server Extensions.
FrontPage and FrontPage Server Extensions will continue to be supported by Microsoft according to the Microsoft Product Lifecyle Policy which is governed by the product release date. For more information, check out the policies regarding FrontPage 2003 and FrontPage 2002.

Hi.
I’m sorry. I’m new to this. Does that mean Expression Web can’t be used to publish a web page?! Or are there no Server Extensions required with Expression Web? Or will FPSEs support publication of web content via Expression Web.
Sorry for the questions, but it sounds like my investment in Expression Web won’t actually yield a published site for me.
Thanks for sharing what you know.
Good day. Ed
you can in fact publish web pages with expression web. If you are used to FP you will see very little difference opening a web with expression. Its all done the same way.
I am trying to publish my web site in expression web and the remote website properties dialog box is the same as frontpage. When I publish, what option should I use, Frontpage server extension (which I thought Expression web didn’t use), WebDAV, FTP, or file system. I built a site from scratch in expression web and when I try to ftp it, a message comes up that says that my site has components that need fpse. If I publish using the fpse option, I get an error saying that there are no server extension installed on the server but why do i need them. Sorry, I am so frustrated. I want to do without fpse because hosting company are starting to not support them.
I too am having the same issue. I’ve been using Front Page, now I’m using Web Expression, and it’s still coming up with an error saying fp extensions are not installed. What the ???
